Abstract

A file of dedications from Thespia in Boeotia enriches the perspectives opened up by Athenian documents. Agathos daimōn has been the subject of dedication since at least the end of the Classical period, and these dedications were part of a sanctuary where the reliefs were dedicated. The god assumes an anthropomorphic appearance, with attributes drawn from the register of elements associated with the figure of Zeus. Still in Boeotia, in Lebadaea, pillars are offered to the daimōn Meilichios, to Meilichios and to Zeus Meilichios, attesting to a structural equivalence between daimōn and Zeus similarly qualified on a coherent set of objects. This association opens up a series of reflections on the scope of the cult of Zeus Meilichios, particularly in Athens, in Piraeus, where the relief studied in the previous lecture comes from, and which is then placed in its topographical and functional context.
