Abstract
Energy storage and conversion is one of the major scientific challenges of the coming decades, and a major environmental issue. What new materials will enable us to manufacture batteries that are more efficient and cleaner ? Jean-Marie Tarascon takes stock of these issues, which concern our future and that of the planet. In particular, he presents lithium ion technologies, the contribution of nanotechnologies, and research aimed at developing materials using " bio-inspired " methods: the use of electrode materials derived from biomass and obtained by " green chemistry ".
