At the heart of all musical activity is the tendency to move to the beat of the music, beating time or dancing. This ability relies on a vast cerebral network, the nature and specificity of which we are beginning to grasp. One of its essential components isbeat finding. This ability develops early in humans and seems to be acquired by certain bird species. Nevertheless, rare individuals seem to lack this ability to follow the rhythm of music. By studying the neurological basis of this variability, we can isolate the brain circuits involved in musical cognition, and establish its specificity in relation to other cognitive functions.
