Ismail Serageldin is a graduate of the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University and obtained his master's and doctorate degrees from Harvard University. Prior to joining the World Bank, Ismail Serageldin worked as a consultant in urban and regional planning and taught at Cairo and Harvard Universities. In 1972, he began his career at the World Bank, where he successively held a number of positions, including: Economist in Education and Human Resources, Division Manager for Technical Assistance and Specialized Studies, and for Urban Projects in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, Program Director for West Africa, Country Director for Central and West Africa, Technical Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Vice President for Environmental and Social Sustainability and, subsequently, for Special Programs. He is currently Director of the Library of Alexandria. Ismail Serageldin has always shown an unwavering commitment to strengthening science for development.
