Thomas Römer, Administrator of the Collège de France, and Étienne de Magnitot, Chairman of Crédit Agricole d'Île-de-France Mécénat and Crédit Agricole d'Île-de-France, signed a sponsorship agreement on Wednesday January 29, 2020, for the restoration of the Kiepert-Beaumont globe.

This globe, probably commissioned in 1850 by Éliede Beaumont, one of the great pioneers of geology in France and holder of the Natural History of Inorganic Bodies chair at the Collège de France (1832-1874), from Hans Kiepert, a renowned manufacturer of globes and mappemondes in Berlin, is a masterpiece of19th-century cartography. It is an exceptional document of the research ofÉliede Beaumont, who used it as a working and teaching aid to present his theories during lectures in the amphitheatre, on a globe large enough to be seen from a distance.

This globe will be one of the symbols of the Institut des Civilisations at the Collège de France, due to open in spring 2020 at 52 rue du Cardinal Lemoine in Paris, where it will welcome visitors in the entrance hall, perfectly illustrating the wide variety of research areas covered by the Chairs of the Institut des Civilisations and the goal of dialogue between cultures that it has set itself.

The restoration work was carried out in collaboration with the Maps and Plans Department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, a repository of exceptional and rare expertise. The work involved Chloé Winckell, a young intern from theÉcole de Condé, in agreement with the patron, whose objectives are to combine the restoration and conservation ofÎle-de-France's heritagewith support for the professional development of young talent.

The Collège de France would like to thank Crédit Agricole d'Île-de-France Mécénat for its support of this project.
