" Justice in the Middle Ages: from archives to the judicial scene "
In the 14th and 15thcenturies , the exercise of royal justice underwent significant development in the kingdom of France: the territorial reach of judicial institutions increased, their personnel became more professional, and procedures became more complex, notably due to the widespread use of the written word. In line with these changes, the archives of the Parlement, the kingdom's highest court of justice, became increasingly voluminous, detailed and complex. Beyond the disputes they document, these archives reveal the workings of the institution. But can they enable us to reconstruct the space of the court, its actors and the concrete unfolding of the judicial process? In this webinar, Élisabeth Schmit will explore the medieval judicial scene through its archives.
