Webinar presentation:
Around the world, scientists are seeking to understand the natural functioning of ecosystems by confining them in artificially closed spaces. A case in point is the historic Biosphere 2 experiment in the USA, where a desert, a rainforest and an ocean have been reconstituted and isolated from the outside world. Why and how can living organisms be studied under a miniature dome?
Through ethnographic surveys of scientists and engineers, the research of Elie Danziger, a doctoral student at the Collège de France (Laboratoire d'anthropologie sociale), focuses on the biological concepts, technical choices and institutional orientations that underpin such experimental projects, which, at first glance, are anything but natural.
His presentation will focus on the diversity of projects and objectives behind this apparent common imaginary of a closed world.
