Martial Gueroult
Kant's Critique of Pure Reason
This volume is the critical edition, by Arnaud Pelletier, of an unpublished manuscript by Martial Gueroult kept in the Archives of the Collège de France, namely his lecture on Kant's Critique of Pure Reason.
Martial Gueroult introduces the lecture he gave at the Collège de France in 1957-1958 : " The richness of the chosen subject : Kant, Critique of Pure Reason, led us to limit it toTranscendental Aesthetics andTranscendental Analytics , and to devote our two weekly lectures to it. Our aim has been twofold : to give as clear and precise an account of the text as possible, and to elucidate not all the problems - they are innumerable - but the most important ones, relating to the meaning and structural economy of the system. "
From the outset, the lecture is aimed at two readers : the student reads a remarkable presentation of the fundamental concepts and arguments of Critique ; the researcher finds a technical discussion of a few central points, in which Gueroult confronts magisterial commentaries, mostly German, and sometimes forgotten today. This book is the final version of this lecture, which was reworked over a period of more than thirty years and has remained unpublished to this day. Both philosophically and pedagogically, it is a must-have for any reading of the Critique of Pure Reason.
