Monday, November 7, 2011: Symposium - The safety of lithium ion batteries: Is zero risk possible?

Chaired by Marc Fontecave, Professor at the Collège de France and Member of the Académie des Sciences

organized by the Réseau sur le Stockage Electrochimie de l'énergie (RS2E), Pr Jean-Marie Tarascon and Pr Patrice Simon, supported by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industry.

The electrochemical storage of energy, both for the exploitation of renewable energies and for the development of electric vehicles, has become one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Batteries, and in particular those using Li ion technology, are currently the most coveted for their high-volume applications, subject to cost reduction and improved safety. The latter has been the subject of much media debate in recent months, but what is really happening to the safety aspect? To answer this question, RS2E is organizing a one-day conference and debate on the safety of Li ion batteries. The conference will be primarily educational and informative. It will bring together presentations by international scientific experts covering (i) materials, systems and electric vehicle integration, as well as (ii) the risks to users in different scenarios. The debate will conclude with a round-table discussion.
