" Blood antiquities: which players in the art trafficking business? "
The destruction of heritage, the looting of historic sites and the illicit trafficking of cultural goods are often the preferred targets of terrorist groups, in unstable geopolitical contexts. Beyond the symbolic significance of the destruction of Palmyra and Aleppo, Nineveh and Mosul, this is a lucrative business that feeds a large underground economy aimed at the European and American markets. This trade tends to evolve in line with conflicts, the shifting of wealth and the enforcement of laws against trafficking in cultural goods, and is directed towards other regions of the world such as Eastern Europe, Asia and the Gulf States. What are the mechanisms and stakes involved in this illicit traffic in the Middle East and North Africa? What can be done to combat it?
