Created in 1954, the CNRS Gold Medal is one of France's most prestigious scientific awards. This year, it honors chemist Jean-Marie Tarascon, a professor at the Collège de France, for his pioneering work in understanding and discovering new lithium-related reaction concepts, synthesizing new electrode and electrolyte materials for batteries, and designing novel batteries.

Jean-Marie Tarascon has worked for over 25 years in laboratories associated with the CNRS. The CNRS gold medal and a 50,000 euro endowment from the CNRS Foundation will be presented to him on December 14, 2022 at a ceremony in Paris.

Born in 1953 in Marmande, Lot-et-Garonne, Jean-Marie Tarascon is a specialist in solid state chemistry and electrochemistry. A member of the Académie des Sciences since 2004, he joined the Collège de France in 2014. Throughout his career, he has managed to combine fundamental research with applications, without ever compromising scientific excellence. Director of the Chemistry of Materials and Energy laboratory (CNRS/Collège de France/Sorbonne Université), and head of the Electrochemical Energy Storage Network (RS2E), he has been navigating since the start of his career - spent in the USA - from idea to object, at the interface of academia and industry.
