It may seem strange to bring together these two fields of thought - economics and cosmology - for a debate on the subject of landscape today. In my view, the reason for submitting this topic to the speakers at these seminars is that these two fields - one involving material exchanges, the other immaterial ones - are being profoundly affected by ecology. In one way or another, we're being asked to revise our relationship with "nature", our consumption patterns, our order of values, here and there establishing the foundations of a belief that we believed to be perennial. We're being asked to rethink our landscape, but we're not fully prepared. The two seminars address this theme in two ways: one research-based, on May 24 at the Collège de France, the other field-based, on June 1 at the Musée du Quai Branly. Speakers are free to approach the subject as they see fit: first and foremost, it's a discussion. To kick off the discussion, I'll introduce the question with a short projection of images. Each speaker will then develop his or her thoughts, and the debate will follow. This will take place first between us, then with the audience.
