Abstract

A fragmentary inscription, snippets of which were mentioned by its inventor, Chr. Le Roy, in Colloquium III. Likya Sempozyumu (Antalya, 2006) : " Statue of worship, ritual and sacrifices at the Letoon of Xanthos ", on p. 404-406, has been interpreted as either " a diagraph regulating the terms of a priesthood sale", or "a decree recording the establishment of a pious foundation ", which could date " from the beginning of the Empire ". We will present the edition and commentary in preparation of what appears to us to be a decree of the people of Xanthos in favor of a benefactor, for us anonymous, who was honored, obviously for exceptional merits, with a rare series of privileges : meal at the hierothyteion, eponymous day, sacrifices, share of honor (geras) transmissible to descendants, banquet. It is likely that this decree, which may date from the 2nd century B.C., ratifies a cultic and perpetual foundation instituted by the benefactor.
