Abstract

Federico De Romanis presents his views on " The Muziris papyrus and the pepper trade in the long history of ". Based on the increasingly precise study of the Muziris papyrus, which lists the goods transported in the 2nd c. by the Hermapollon ship and their prices, he places the pepper trade in a perspective spanning the centuries up to the Portuguese navigations of the 15th and 16th c. This broad vision leads him to estimate the order of magnitude of pepper imports during the Roman Empire.
