Prof. Deeds performed his undergraduate work at Case Western Reserve University and graduated with degrees in Biochemistry and English Literature. He pursued his Ph.D. studies in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard under the direction of Eugene Shakhnovich. He was a postdoctoral fellow with Walter Fontana in the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School. He became an Assistant Professor at the University of Kansas in 2010 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016.

In 2018, Prof. Deeds moved to UCLA where he is currently in the Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology and the Institute for Quantitative and Computational Biosciences.
