Abstract

Jean-Marc Ghigo is an eminent specialist in biofilms, the genetic and molecular basis of their formation, and their regulation, particularly the crucial transition between sedentary (biofilm) and planktonic (free) phases. This transition is important because in the biofilm position, bacteria acquire " refractance " to antibiotics, i.e. reversible resistance during the planktonic transition. A large proportion of chronic infections are caused by bacteria organized in biofilms. The development of biofilm-dispersing agents presented in this seminar is one of the innovative approaches in the fight against antibiotic resistance, and offers hope for better control of chronic bacterial infections.
