Abstract

Thirty years of global response to the AIDS epidemic have transformed public health practice and influenced international development policies. Peter Piot, long-time director of UNAIDS, takes stock. He shows how the fight to prevent and treat HIV has favored multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral approaches, the involvement of affected communities, the promotion of human rights, rigorous program evaluation, and the global mobilization of governments and civil society. These approaches can be applied to other health and development issues.
