Abstract

When a constant force is superimposed on the periodic force created by a grating, an astonishing quantum phenomenon appears: the particles begin to oscillate. Cold atoms confined in optical lattices have enabled us to study this phenomenon in great detail, and we have presented several experimental demonstrations. We have also discussed the metrological value of these Bloch oscillations, both for determining fundamental constants and for the very precise measurement of forces such as gravity.
