An introduction to the electronic structure and properties of transition metal oxides was given in the June 2 lecture. It focused on the important perovskite family, recalled the main elements of crystal field theory, and illustrated some essential notions of the electronic structure of these materials on the example of titanates and vanadates. On June 9, Antoine Maignan (CRISMAT, Caen) gave a seminar on "Transition metal oxides: square and triangular lattices to generate new functionalities", providing a chemist's view of the chemistry and physics of a number of oxide families, based on recent developments.
