After defending a thesis on imitation in Timurid culture in 2013 (IISMM prize for best thesis awarded in 2016) and holding postdoctoral positions at the Free University of Amsterdam (VU, 2014-2015), the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 2015-2016) and at EHESS (Paris, 2016-2017), Marc Toutant has been a CNRS research fellow and lecturer at Inalco since 2017, where he teaches comparative grammar of Turkish languages (undergraduate) and Chaghatay Turkish (master's).
A historian of classical Central Asia, he is currently focusing his research on the influence of Timurid culture in Mughal India (16th-19th centuries) and in the Ottoman Empire (14th-16th centuries), through the study of the role and place of Chaghatay Turkish in these two political entities, from both a linguistic and literary point of view.
Marc Toutant is also editor of the journal Turcica.
