Gianfranco Agosti is a specialist in Greek culture of the Imperial period and Late Antiquity. He is Professor of Classical Philology and Late Antiquity and Director of the Doctoral School in Ancient Sciences and Archaeology at the University of Pisa. He has been a visiting scholar and visiting professor at various institutions (Center for Hellenic Studies, Washington DC ; EPHE ; Paris-Sorbonne ; Université Laval, Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, Gutenberg Chair at the University of Strasbourg in 2019 ; British Academy Visiting Professor at the University of St Andrews, Leverhulme Professor at the University of Newcastle). He is a member of the Academia Europaea. His publications focus on Late Antique Greek poetry and Nonnos of Panopolis (annotated editions of chant  5of the Paraphrase, 2003, and books 25-39 of the Dionysiacs, 20133), literary papyrology, pagan-Christian relations in cultural production, and verse inscriptions. He is currently working on a monograph on Greek stone poems between the 4th and 7th centuries AD.
