International symposium organized to mark the centenary of the Institut des hautes études chinoises.

Although France was the first country in Europe to institutionalize sinology in 1814 with the creation of a chair at the Collège de France, it was with Édouard Chavannes (1865-1918) that it entered its modern era. Although he was not present at the founding of the Institut des hautes études chinoises (IHEC) in Paris in 1920, it was his students, Paul Pelliot and Marcel Granet, who were its main driving forces. To mark the centenary of the IHEC, now known as the Centre d'études chinoises and part of the Pôle Mondes asiatiques of the Collège de France's Institut des Civilisations, this international symposium will look back at the work of Chavannes and his heirs.

The symposium will take place on October 14 2024 at the BnF Richelieu (salle des conférences) and on October 15 2024 at the Institut des Civilisations of the Collège de France (salle Françoise Héritier).
