For the first time, the Collège de France is taking part in the Nuit des idées, in partnership with France Culture, and in collaboration with La Vie des idées, Entre-Temps and the "Anthropologie de la vie" team from the Social Anthropology Laboratory. On January 30, 2020, from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, Collège de France professors and researchers, France Culture producers and their guests will debate in public the issues raised by the 2020 theme: Being alive.
Two amphitheatres will be open to the public, each with its own original and varied program.
Admission free without registration, subject to availability.
La Nuit des idées is an international event presented by theInstitut français.
Life has become a supreme value in our societies, driven both by the extraordinary development of the biological sciences, and by the growing feeling that living things, in all their forms, must be protected. Yet being alive implies a wide range of experiences and issues that are difficult to unify. This is because life interweaves the biological and the biographical, the properties of organized beings that form a system and the narrative of events that affect them, fact and value. It's also that life is bounded by limits, to which our knowledge and imagination are applied with varying degrees of success: the emergence and death of the living being, its interaction with technology and the machine, but also the life of others, gods, humans or animals, the dreamed, possible, utopian or fantastic life. Finally, life serves as a fundamental metaphor for our relationship with the objects, ideas and beings that accompany us, and as living beings, we always seem to presuppose its definition.
For a whole evening, the Collège de France and its partners invite you to explore these lifelines together. Two amphitheaters will be open to the public from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, each featuring a varied and original program.
