Reading the Treatise on Rites (continued)

from to

A good knowledge of classical Chinese is required for the seminar.

The weekly seminar, led by Anne Cheng, Stéphane Feuillas (professor at Paris-Diderot University) and Marc Kalinowski (director of studies at the EPHE), was devoted, as in the three previous years, to the ongoing reading of a chapter from the Treatise on Rites(Liji 禮記). The one for this 2015-2016 year focused on the chapter entitled " Ruxing " 儒行 which can be translated at first analysis as " the conduct of the [Confucian] scholar ". Classified by Liu Xiang, Liu Xin and then Zheng Xuan as one of the " general treatises "(tonglun 通論) along with the famous " Zhongyong ", usually translated as " le Juste milieu ", it is presented as a series of nineteen short articles offering a slightly annoyed response from the master Confucius to a mocking question from Duke Ai of the country of Lu (?-468 BCC.) about the attire of ru 儒.
