Abstract
In his opening lecture, delivered on November 15 2007, Manfred Kropp (re)constructs the first verses of Sura 85, " The circle of the zodiac ". His resolutely scientific approach to the religious text places him in the rationalist tradition of the 19th century, through figures such as Ernest Renan, professor at the Collège de France from 1862 to 1882.
