Abstract

In preparing this lesson, I discovered that roboticists have a god : Hephaestus. In Greek mythology, Hephaestus is a talented craftsman. Seduced by Athena, he tried to possess her, but failed : the goddess of knowledge resisted the god of doing.

Robotics stems from this tension. While the myth runs counter to the current trend towards blurring the lines between science and technology, it nevertheless reflects my experience of innovation.
