Abstract

A very important factor in the emergence of scholarship was to prohibit access to knowledge acquired by unauthorized persons, and to prevent the number of scholars from growing too large. This lecture will outline how the transmission of knowledge was regulated and how kings protected themselves against scholars betraying their secrets, placing this issue in the wider context of the transmission of knowledge in the Middle East. In doing so, we will also discuss in detail how ancient Eastern knowledge may have influenced biblical and Greek scholarship.
