Abstract
This lecture will examine some of the general criticisms levelled at the International Court of Justice and seek to respond to them. These include criticism from realist scholars, who argue that the Court is essentially a political body, but without any power ; criticism from Third World scholars (TWAIL), who point to the Court's colonial origins and the elements of colonialism that run through its judgments ; and criticism from feminist scholars, who focus on the under-representation of women on the Court, and the effect this has on the Court's jurisprudence.
