Niek Veldhuis studied Semitic Languages under H.L.J. Vanstiphout in Groningen (The Netherlands), where he received his doctorate with the dissertation Elementary Education at Nippur: The Lists of Trees and Wooden Objects (1997). In 1998-1999 he spent two years at the University of Pennsylvania as a postdoc for the Pennsylvania Sumerian Dictionary. After a brief period back in Groningen he accepted the position of Professor of Assyriology at University of California, Berkeley. Niek Veldhuis has published several books, including History of the Cuneiform Lexical Tradition (2014) and has been an active proponent of the "digital turn" in cuneiform studies.
