Hilary Charlesworth is a judge of the International Court of Justice, to which she was first elected in 2021. Before this, she held a number of academic positions, most recently at the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne. She has been a visiting professor at various institutions including Harvard Law School, New York University Law School and the London School of Economics. Her research interests include the workings of the international human rights system, sources of international law, feminist approaches to international law and visual cultures of international law. She has served on the executive boards of the Asian Society of International Law and the American Society of International Law and as President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law. She is a member of the Institut de Droit International and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.
