Causes and external conditions of illness and health
" Much has been researched and taught about disease as an internal, curable phenomenon ; here, I'd like to emphasize the complementary view of disease as an external, preventable phenomenon. "
Infectious diseases have long been the major cause of mortality in Europe. Their gradual control has led to a spectacular increase in life expectancy, giving way to the reign of chronic diseases (cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, cancers). Without denying the influence of genetic polymorphisms and so-called " lifestyle factors " (tobacco, alcohol, dietary imbalances, sedentary lifestyle), the author shows how changes in our ecosystems since the beginning of the Anthropocene and our current physico-chemical environment (persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disruptors) contribute to the onset of these chronic diseases. The challenge is not only to understand the causes of death, but also to identify the causes of these causes.
