Paul Veyne's death

It is with deep sadness that the Administrator, the Board of Professors and the entire Collège de France community learn of the death of Paul Veyne, Honorary Professor at the Collège de France and holder of the Chair in the History of Rome from 1976 to 1999.

They pay tribute to a professor who never ceased to propose new approaches to the history of Greek and Roman antiquity, both through his hard and discreet work as a scholar and through his concern to share his thoughts with cultivated readers.

In his work, Paul Veyne has taken a particularly original and innovative look at the Greek and Roman worlds, demonstrating unfailing rigor and a lively, highly personal style that is particularly evident in his books Comment on écrit l'histoire and Les Grecs ont-ils cru à leurs mythes, which have become classics.
