Memory of an ethnographic survey : Nathan Wachtel's notebooks

From 1973 to 1982, Prof. Nathan Wachtel (Chair History and Anthropology of Meso and South American Societies, 1995-2005) studied the last community of Urus, a Bolivian society living on the shores of Lake Coipasa. In the course of this ethnographic survey, which he completed by consulting numerous archives, he wrote over thirty notebooks. They formed the basis of his thesis, published in 1991 under the title Le Retour des Ancêtres : les indiens Urus de Bolivie XXe-XVIe siècles, essai d'histoire régressive. These notebooks were deposited by Pr Wachtel in 2022 at the Claude Lévi-Strauss library, and are presented to you on Colligere.
