Abstract

" The chair I have the honor of inaugurating today is organized around two closely related fields: the Achaemenid Persian world and Alexander's empire. Geopolitically homologous, or almost so - both extended from the Indus to the Balkans and from Central Asia to Aswan - the two empires have had contrasting historiographical destinies, to say the least. Since antiquity, the story of Alexander has exerted a profound fascination and has fuelled a burgeoning stream of books and studies. Although much more firmly rooted in time, the history of the Achaemenid Persian Empire has not aroused the same passionate interest... "
