Following on from the discussions in Punishment. A contemporary passion, the lecture examines punishment from philosophical, historical, anthropological, sociological and literary perspectives. If there is one area that crystallizes moral questions and reveals political issues, it is the way in which societies punish breaches of the law. The need to think about punishment, in and beyond its legal form, is essential in view of the punitive moment that French society has been going through since the second half of the twentieth century.
