Abstract

Earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions: the scale of some recent natural disasters and their dramatic consequences have reminded us of the power of terrestrial phenomena and the need for scientific research to better understand the Earth's dynamics. Over the past twenty years, the study of the Earth's interior has undergone a veritable revolution, thanks in particular to the development of increasingly powerful seismic tomography techniques and the computing power made possible by computers. Barbara Romanowicz presents the current advances and challenges in global seismology.
