The extraordinary development of archaeology, particularly preventive archaeology, over the last three or four decades has produced a considerable mass of material documents and contextual data that need to be approached and analyzed from a historical perspective. Focusing on present-day Switzerland, and more specifically on the Middle Country between the Jura and the Alps, the lectures integrated this territory with its arbitrary boundaries into a wider research dynamic, particularly in France and Germany. The presentations drew on studies in progress, often unpublished, whose authors are duly thanked.
